I giardini a New York, e soprattutto a Manhattan, tra le città più compatte del pianeta, mostrano come gli spazi aperti abbiano una specifica densità, rispetto al costruito e siano un “fronte di resistenza” rispetto ai processi di trasformazione immobiliare, ai Piani, agli interventi pubblici e a quelli privati, cui a volte si oppongono efficacemente le azioni civiche e partecipative degli abitanti. La trama del verde va letta, dunque, nel saggio, in base alla relazione tensiva tra fenomeni molto diversi che contribuiscono a configurare una morfologia “porosa” costituita anche da spazi aperti differenti. L'articolo racconta l'esperienza della CoPED Summer School (Community Planning and Ecological Design) svolta in Sicilia, nella Valle del Simeto, a Giugno 2015. La Scuola è una delle tappe del processo di costruzione del Patto per il fiume Simeto, che è cominciato nel 2002 ed è stato condotto in una cornice di community-university partnership da alcuni action-researchers in collaborazione con la comunità locale.
